William (Rick) Maxwell
William (Rick) Maxwell, began his tuba career in the fifth grade, when his band director told him that the tuba is a lot more fun to play than the drums. After falling for this slight exaggeration of the definition of “fun,” Rick found that he had a genuine interest and ability in the large mass of twisted tubing and shiny brass that is the tuba. His interest grew until it became obvious to him that he would major in music in college and study the tuba on a much more highly concentrated level.
After studying briefly with Donald Stanley at Mansfield University, Mr. Maxwell went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in music performance at Rowan University with the late Dr. Owen Metcalf in 1994. He has also studied with University of Delaware Professor Dr. Jay Hildebrand of the Delaware Symphony.
Mr. Maxwell has performed with brass quintets across the Delaware Valley, with the Bridgeton Symphony (now the Bay Atlantic Symphony) and with the Haddonfield Symphony (now Symphony in C). He has been with the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey for seventeen of its nineteen seasons.
Mr. Maxwell teaches music in the Camden City school system. He holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership, and hopes to pursue a career in school administration. He lives in Pitman with his wife, Candy, and their daughter, Lily. |
