Concert Etiquette

When attending a concert keep these ten simple rules in mind:

  1. Arrive on time. Allow plenty of time for traffic and parking. Enter and exit your seat only between selections. If possible, wait until the audience is applauding before moving. The only exception to this is if you need to remove a restless or crying child.

  2. Turn cell phones and pagers off. With all the new technological equipment available these days, it is easy to forget to turn off your cell phone or beeper. There is nothing more distracting than a loud ringing during the middle of a concert.

  3. Do not take pictures during the performance. The flash can be very distracting to the performers and the audience.

  4. It is customary to applaud when the conductor first comes out on the stage. He or she will bow to acknowledge the audience's applause and the concert will begin.

  5. Don't talk during a performance. Even the quietest whisper can be heard in a resonant concert hall. Try to refrain from commenting on the music until the end of the piece. It will give you more to talk about at intermission!

  6. Humming and/or singing along with the music even if you know the entire piece by heart can be very disruptive to those around you.

  7. It's okay to suck on candy or chew gum during a concert, especially if it prevents you from coughing. However, the sound of unwrapping such items can be just as distracting as coughing itself, so make sure to do all of your unwrapping before the music begins.

  8. Maestro TravalineSome classical pieces of music are broken down into parts called "movements." In between these movements the music will stop for a few seconds. Do not applaud until the conductor has dropped his hands and has turned around to acknowledge the audience.

  9. Whistling, yelling, or otherwise congratulating the performers is generally not appropriate for classical music concerts. Proper applause is greatly appreciated!

  10. Stay until the end of the performance. Leaving early may make the performers think that you did not enjoy the performance.
