Philip Francis Travaline

Philip F. Travaline

Conductor and Music Director Philip F. Travaline has guided the Philharmonic from its first rehearsal in September 1991 to the present.  During this time, the PSNJ has performed over ten premieres, accompanied world-class soloists, and presented Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, with three choruses and four soloists, for the millennium. Creating programming that holds interest for the players and audience alike is a challenge that Maestro Travaline relishes.  Composing new music, arranging old music, and playing trumpet fill out his schedule.

Maestro Travaline studied conducting with the late William Smith, former associate conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the late Arthur Cohn, conductor emeritus of the Haddonfield Symphony.  Maestro Travaline studied composition and orchestration with the late Dr. Vincent Persichetti, Joseph Castaldo and Romeo Cascarino, and theory with Dr. Donald Chittum.  He studied trumpet with the late Gilbert Johnson, former principal trumpeter of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and recently with Dr. Brian Appelby-Weinberg of Rowan University.  Maestro Travaline has taken master classes with Lorin Maazel, formerly of the New York Philharmonic; Leonard Slatkin of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and formerly with the National Symphony; David Zinman, formerly of the Baltimore Symphony; George Meister; and Pierre Boulez.  His degrees are from Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State College) and the University of the Arts (formerly the Philadelphia Conservatory).  He also has studied at Rutgers University, Temple University, the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, and the University of New Hampshire.

Maestro Travaline was formerly the music director of the Susquehanna Valley Symphony, and the associate conductor and principal trumpeter of the Haddonfield Symphony.  He has guest-conducted the New Jersey All-State Orchestra, the New Jersey All-State Opera, and many area orchestras.  He also has conducted in five European countries under the auspices of American Music Abroad.

An FAA-licensed commercial pilot and flight instructor, Maestro Travaline and his wife, Bobbie, have sailed the east coast of the Mid-Atlantic region as well as the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River. Currently, they plan to camp in as many states as time and fuel allow. Their children are Gabriella, Alison, Katharine, and Brett.  Maestro Travaline and his wife recently welcomed their first grandchild, Casey Jordan.
