Steven Schaffner

Steven Schaffner

Steven Schaffner has served the Philharmonic as associate conductor since 1997.  He has conducted a number of ensembles in the area, including the Haddonfield Symphony, the Cherry Hill Wind Symphony, and the show orchestras for the Pinelands Players, the Log Cabin Playhouse, and the Moorestown Theater Company.  He is a member of the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra, the Newtown Chamber Orchestra, the Seacoast Brass Quintet, and the Midiri Brothers Orchestra, where he has been an arranger and lead trumpeter since 1988.

Mr. Schaffner holds a B.A. in Music Education from Mercyhurst College and an M.M. in Performance from the University of Massachusetts.  His trumpet instructors include Emerson Rusterholtz, Robert Nagel, Roger Blackburn and Walter Chesnut, and he has studied conducting with Michael Pratt and C. Thomas Brooks.

Mr. Schaffner founded Schaffner Publishing Company in 1981 with the idea of publishing his collection of arrangements for brass ensembles.  Since then, the catalog has grown to include a large number of original choral and instrumental works.  He has worked as a music editor and engraver for many of the large music publishing houses, including Galaxy Music Corporation, Gaudia Music and Arts, ECS Publishing, G. Schirmer, and Peer-Southern.  While at Galaxy, he was the recipient of six Paul Revere Awards for Graphic Excellence.

For many years he has worked as a free-lance music engraver for the Philadelphia Orchestra under former librarian Clinton F. Nieweg, a relationship that continues to this day under the current librarian, Robert Grossman.  One of his most recent publications is a new edition of the Capuzzi Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra, which he has re-orchestrated for modern orchestra and from which he has constructed a piano reduction.  In 2003, he completed the supervision of a fourteen-year project: the publication of a thirty-volume series of Renaissance Italian madrigals for Gaudia Music and Arts.

Mr. Schaffner’s interests include photography and amateur radio, for which he holds the call sign KC2MIY.  He resides in Haddon Township with his wife, Cheryl Van Buren, and daughters Erin and Laura.
